EXPERIENCE A NORTH SHORE SKIING ADVENTURE

MARCH 8, 2025

ABOUT SKI NORTH ULTRA

Ski North Ultra is an ultra-distance 100K cross-country skiing classic-only event along the North Shore of Lake Superior. The event has 22K, 46K and 100K options, following the Norpine, Cascade River State Park and Bally Creek trail systems near Lutsen, MN.

Welcome

THE COURSE

Elevation profile coming soon!

IF YOU LOVE CROSS COUNTRY SKIING AND THE NORTH SHORE, THIS RACE IS FOR YOU.

Start and finish by the frosty Cascade River waterfalls. Glide through birch, fir, cedar and pine forests, with wintery glimpses of Lake Superior.

The course trails are mostly beginner to intermediate, with some advanced sections, and are a mix of skate/classic, double-track classic and single-track classic trails. However, this race is a classic-only event (no skating).

Experience the beauty of the North Shore by ski trail and then keep the vibes going with a post-race celebration at Up Yonder in Grand Marais.

22K

Embark on the west side of Cascade River State Park, including the Pioneer and Deer Yard Loops. This is our shortest event but there is nothing lacking about it!

46K

This beauty includes almost a complete tour of the Norpine Ski Trail system, and what a way to spend a day! Double track, classic-only ski trails, a dreamy way to spend a morning.

100K

Have you ever had a 100K Day? This race was inspired by the interconnecting ski trail systems that are part of the novelty of the north shore trail scene. Trails that seemingly don't end. At least, you won't want them to. For the hearty of heart.

Price discounts and student pricing available. Please email rykken44@gmail.com for more info.

The What-Ifs: We're really crossing our fingers for a winter with average/above average snow, in which case, March skiing up north is the BEST. However, courses may be subject to change based on snow conditions, and will be made in the best interest of the participant's safety and overall experience. In the case of extreme temperatures or conditions, we may adjust the start times and distances. The goal will be to put on the best race possible with the factors we are given. Partial refunds may be available in the case of a cancellation, which may need to occur if there is very low to no snow, or really horrible extreme conditions (block of ice, -20 degrees, etc). But I'm betting on a blue-sky day, with slightly crusty fast snow in the morning, softening mid-day, and speeding back up into the late afternoon. Thanks for understanding it's all a gamble!

Cut-off Times: In the interest of volunteers' time and keeping everyone to daylight hours, we will have a cut-off time of 12 hours for the 100K and 8 hours for the 46K.

Safety: There are inherent risks in any endurance event, but please note the following:

• Conditions are subject to change throughout the day.

• Aid Stations may have distances up to 12 km between them and some may be self-served.

ROAD CROSSINGS: Skiers will need to cross roads during the race, and will be fully responsible for watching for any on-coming vehicles and making their own decisions upon when to cross. Do NOT assume cars will stop for you.

• There are two-way sections in which you will need to be cautious of other skiers and stay to the right side of the trail.

• There is one section of trail leading to and from the Bally Creek trail system that is less maintained than the others (a work in progress!).

• The trails will be open to the public, so please be mindful of other trail users.

• Please use caution in general and remember it's fun to stay safe!

Aid Stations: Aid Stations will largely be run by volunteers - some farther reaching ones (Bally Creek) have limited parking and may be self-serve/organized by a smaller group. You can expect water, energy drinks, and a variety of food/fuel options. We will have some cups available but please plan to carry your own beverage containers.

What's included: Your registration covers the time it takes to create and facilitate the logistics of a brand-new race, trail grooming over a LARGE distance, a handful of permits, insurance, racer hats, awards, aid station foods, race supplies, signage, and post-event food and space. A portion of profits will also go the Norpine Trail Association for their support.

The Great Minnesota Ski Pass: We get to ski on wonderful State Park and National Forest Service lands. Thank you to all who currently and have historically cared for this incredible area. All racers should have a Great MN Ski Pass ($10 Day Pass or $25 Season Pass), which gives you access to all state park and state forest ski trails. Thank you!

This event is operating under a special use permit on the Superior National Forest.

VOLUNTEER

Want to join the fun but maybe not ski that far? We would love to have you as a volunteer, and we'll have many roles to fill of varying commitments. Please check out our volunteer Sign Up Genius page, or email rykken44@gmail.com. Also seeking groups to help run aid stations. Thank for you considering!

LODGING

There are many wonderful places to stay near the race course and along the North Shore, but here are a few we'd recommend:

Solbakken Resort: One of our aid stations and right off the race course, this cozy option is right on Lake Superior. A variety of room styles available.

Cascade Lodge: Another on-trail option, and within walking/skiing distance of the start/finish. Lodge and cabin options, with a restaurant on-site, and views of Lake Superior.

Ski Hill Cabins: Located feet away from the 24k marker of the 100k course, these beautiful cabins include a sauna experience, so maybe the downside is only the temptation to call it good after 24k.
